Abe, where are you when we need you?

“Don’t interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties. And not to Democrats alone do I make this appeal, but to all who love these great and true principles.”   ~ Abraham Lincoln, August 27, 1856 Speech at Kalamazoo, Michigan

We Are Not Alone

“Every great work, every big accomplishment, has been brought into manifestation through holding to the vision, and often just before the big achievement, comes apparent failure and discouragement.” ~ Florence Scovel Shinn

“In spite of everything I shall rise again: I will take up my pencil, which I have forsaken in my great discouragement, and I will go on with my drawing.” ~ Vincent Van Gogh

The Gospel Commandments of Leadership

This was written (by Paul Chappell)  to those who serve others in the ministry, but the list can be applied to any form of leadership. This list outlines the plight of moms, especially those who have adopted special needs kids. There isn’t a lot of payback in the first few years, but we all hold out hope that one day we will be loved, and if not loved, at least respected for all the years of sacrifice and service we gave our children. And, if we never get that either, at least we know we did what God asked us to do. We know He loves us – sometimes that just has to be enough.

1.  People are illogical, unreasonable and self centered. Love and trust them anyway.

2.  If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Do good anyway.

3.  If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.

4.  The service you render today will be forgotten tomorrow. Serve people anyway.

5.  Honesty and frankness will make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.

6.  The biggest men with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men with the smallest ideas. Think big anyway.

7.  People pretend to love the “little” people but sell their souls to the “big” people. Fight for the “little” people anyway.

8. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.

9. People really need help but may attack you if you do help. Help people anyway.

10. Give the world the best you have, and you’ll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.

For all you home schoolers…

“It is absurd and anti-life to move from cell to cell to the sound of a gong for every day of your natural youth in an institution that allows you no privacy and even follows you to the sanctuary of your home demanding that you do its “homework.”     – John Taylor Gatto

Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires courage.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Voltaire

“No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible.”

What a nice surprise!

I am always apprehensive when going to a new church while on vacation. I watch and wait to see what uncomfortable thing is going to happen next. But it was different this time. The people were friendly. The music was God honoring and very enjoyable. When we stood to introduce ourselves as visitors and we told them why we were in Wisconsin, they all clapped for Andrew and several after the service thanked him for his service in Iraq. The pastor’s sermon was amazing and just what I needed to hear. He was down to earth and used lots of Scripture to make his points (I love that). I wasn’t planning on taking notes, but I was compelled to not let it go. I will definitely use what he taught today to help others along the way.

On the way out I was going to tell him that I appreciated him and his church but when we walked out, he was distracted by someone and we walked right past him. But true to form of a pastor who truly has God’s hand on his life, when he saw us, his visitors, walk by without being greeted, he stopped his conversation abruptly and chased us down so he would not miss the opportunity to make us feel welcome.

Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about!

What an encouragement to me to see that there really are other churches out there that are doing what they’re supposed to do. Here’s the web site of Wyldewood Baptist Church. If I lived in Oshkosh, WI, I’d go to this church.

“God reserves His best for those who leave the choice to Him.” Pastor Randy King

Wednesday Night Bible Study

Wednesday night Pastor Mark gave the Ten Principles of Reformers Unanimous to the people at church for our Bible study. They bear repeating (or in this case, listing, for he only got through principal 4!)

1. If God is against it, so am I.

2. Every sin has its origin in our hearts.

3. It is easier to keep the heart clean than to clean it after it has been defiled.

4. We cannot fight a fleshly appetite by indulging in it.

5. Small compromises lead to great disasters. (Little sin leads to big sin.)

6. Those who do not love the Lord will not help us serve the Lord.

7. Our sinful habits hurt those who are following us.

8. It is not possible to fight a fleshly temptation with fleshly weapons.

9. We lose our freedom to choose when we give in to temptation. The consequences of our choices are inevitable, cannot be calculated, and are up to God.

10. God balances guilt with blame. Accept the blame for your actions and God will remove the guilt.

No Kidding

“Our blessed Lord reveals himself to his people more in the valleys, in the shades, in the deeps, than he does anywhere else. He has a way and an art of showing himself to his children at midnight, making the darkness light by his presence.” ~ Charles Spurgeon

Are we fit for the Master’s use?

“God is not looking for brilliant men, is not depending upon eloquent men, is not shut up to the use of talented men in sending His Gospel out in the world. God is looking for broken men, for men who have judged themselves in the light of the Cross of Christ. When He wants anything done, He takes up men who have come to an end of themselves, and whose trust and confidence is not in themselves but in God.” ~H.A. Ironside
